Lives and works Phnom Penh

Sopheap Pich creates sculptures and installations that use an array of historically significant materials from Cambodian crafts culture, such as bamboo, rattan, beeswax, and soil. Pich’s work for the 14th Gwangju Biennale is a public installation in the outdoor garden situated in front of the Gwangju National Museum. Each of the five sculptures that comprise La Danse 2022 was created through a process of hammering and moulding recycled aluminium products onto different myrtle trees. The discrete aluminium parts that constitute the sculptures are an index of the lived reality of Cambodia, as aluminium objects are commonly used in everyday life in the country. The title of the installation, which is a reference to Henri Matisse’s painting that depicts dancers in movement, accentuates the sense of motion generated by the shapes of the individual trees.
