Seung Ae Lee creates drawings, animations, and installations that seek to capture immaterial elements such as emotions, light, and sound. For the 14th Gwangju Biennale, Lee presents a mural and animation project that takes its cues from purification rituals found in Korean folk religions, which aim to wash away the grief and sorrow of the deceased. Rather than depict the scene of the ritual literally, the artist evokes its mystical atmosphere by introducing abstract cutouts that were created by rubbing everyday materials such as wood, stone, and soil onto paper, which are then connected by the artist’s own drawing onto the surface of the wall. The animation reinforces such sensations of the unknown by transforming everyday objects into dreamlike concoctions against the sound of percussion and wind.
