Pangrok Sulap is a Malaysian collective of artists, musicians, and social activists with a mission to empower rural communities and the marginalised through art. For the 14th Gwangju Biennale, members of Pangrok Sulap have conducted research into the history of South Korea’s woodcut printing movement and its relation to democracy. Through their encounters with woodcut print artists from Gwangju and the collections of works that served a pivotal role in recording and commemorating the May 18 Democratic Movement, Pangrok Sulap began to question if the practice can still be made relevant today. Gwangju Blooming 2023 depicts moments of collective resistance, solidarity, and mourning related to May 18 Democratic Movement. They are also visual reinterpretations of archival images and documented recordings of people’s lives in Gwangju that the collective came across during their research. Through the act of collective wood carving, Pangrok Sulap asks how might we make the struggles of the past relevant and resonant with current struggles.
