Lives and works Paris

In 1953 when she was a young child, Huong Dodinh and her family were forced to abandon their home in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. Fleeing war, they sought refuge in Paris, where the artist still lives. It was there that she witnessed snow for the first time, marvelling at the blending of land and sky, which remains an inspiration today. While Dodinh’s paintings may appear minimalist, she is adamant that there is no emptiness, but that her paintings are full of colour with a ‘life underneath’. She uses the fluidity of vertical, horizontal, and curved lines to convey light and to create a contemplative atmosphere. As she explains, ‘these lines give direction, but never a goal or departure or arrival because life is a continuum. There is life, there is death, there is life, there is death. Everything is there, everything is connected.’
