Merging documentary and fiction, Emilija Škarnulytė creates films and video installations that engage with the relationship between human and non-human worlds. For the 14th Gwangju Biennale, Škarnulytė presents Æqualia 2023, an immersive installation that combines footage of various bodies of water surrounding the Amazon forest that the artist has amassed over the years. Throughout the film, a chimera-like figure navigates different rivers around the Amazon, sometimes interacting with the pink river dolphins that are characteristic of the region. In one sequence, the figure cuts through the confluence in which the milky, white water with clays from the High Andes of Rio Solimoes merges with the murky, black water of Rio Negro. Mirrored onto the ceiling, which is covered with a layer of reflective surface, the fantastical images of the Amazon by Škarnulytė blur the boundary between reality and myth.
