Cheol-woo Gu

Born 1904 | Hwasun
Lived and worked Gwangju, Died 1989

Cheol-woo Gu, whose work is emblematic of the Honam style of calligraphy and painting, moved from Seoul to Gwangju in 1928 and began learning painting and calligraphy in earnest from Baek-ryeon Heo (1891–1977). Ten songs of Haengcho 1970s is characterised by a looser, more flowing version of haeseo and consists of the following texts: Contemplation by Lee Sang and Hanak, In Reply to Someone by Taesang Eunja, Home Again by Dumok, An Autumn Day on the Lake by Seolyeong, Farewell to a Guest on the Last Day of the Third Moon by Choiro, With the Army by Yeonghocho, A Spring Day’s Longing by Chang-seo Kim, By the Water by Baek Ju-yi. An artistic interpretation of poetic passages that treat ethics, morality, and daily life, Ten Songs of Haengcho offers a glimpse into Gu’s humanistic spirit.
